  • Best Towels in Singapore: 4 Picks That Actually Dry

egyptian cotton bath towel in sunlit, serene bathroom

You step out of a warm shower, reach for the towel on the hook, and there it is: that faint, sour, "not quite dry" smell. Again.

If you live in an HDB flat or a condo with one small exhaust fan and zero afternoon sun, you know this struggle well. Singapore's humidity turns closed bathrooms into moisture traps, and a towel that never dries properly between showers quickly becomes home to the bacteria behind that musty smell. Even the legendary SAF green towel, famous for surviving just about anything, never won any awards for comfort.

So what are the best towels in Singapore, really? Not the thickest ones on the shelf. They are the ones built for our climate: soft enough to feel like a small daily luxury, yet light and breathable enough to be dry by your next shower. This guide cuts through the jargon (GSM, Egyptian, Turkish, bamboo) and tells you exactly what to pick for your bathroom.

The Short Answer: Which Towel Should You Buy?

Short on time? Find your situation below, then read on for the reasons and our picks.

If this sounds like you Go for Why it works
Small bathroom, no window, towels always smell musty Bamboo cotton Breathable and odour-resistant, with a silky, cool feel
You want a hotel feel without the damp penalty Mid-weight Egyptian cotton Plush and smooth, but light enough to dry overnight
You want fast drying that stays soft and fluffy Turkish Aegean cotton Airy yarns that soak up water fast and let it go quickly
Towels for the kids, or a gift Premium combed cotton with fun prints Tough enough for daily washing, easy to love

Why "Thicker Is Better" Fails in Singapore Bathrooms

The frustration usually starts in the department store. Most of us have been taught that thicker means better, so we pick up a heavy 800 GSM towel, feel how dense it is, and assume it must be premium.

But ultra-dense towels are made for cooler, drier climates, often with heated towel rails to match. In a humid HDB or condo bathroom, all that density works against you. Water gets trapped deep inside the tightly packed loops, the towel stays damp for hours, and by the next morning that wet dog smell has moved in for good.

The fix is not to settle for a paper-thin gym towel either. It is about balance: enough weight to feel plush, and the right fibre to let moisture escape.

A great towel has to perform on your bathroom hook, not just on the shop shelf.

    What GSM Actually Means

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre. Think of it as the towel version of thread count in bedsheets: it tells you how heavy and dense a towel is and, most importantly for us, how long it will take to dry.

GSM range How it feels In a Singapore bathroom
Under 400 Light and thin, like a gym or beach towel Dries very fast, but lacks that cosy plushness
400 to 550 Soft and substantial without feeling heavy The sweet spot: comfortable, and dries overnight on a standard rack
550 and above Dense, heavy, hotel weight Feels amazing, but needs good airflow or aircon to dry fully

Egyptian vs Turkish vs Bamboo: What Is the Difference?

Weight is only half the story. The fibre itself decides how a towel feels, how it handles water, and how it holds up after months of laundry.

    • Egyptian cotton: Known for its extra-long fibres, which spin into a smooth, strong yarn. The result is a towel with a soft sheen, a plush hand-feel and good durability. Longer fibres also mean fewer loose ends, so you get less of the lint shedding common in cheaper towels.
    • Turkish (Aegean) cotton: Grown in the Aegean region of Turkey, this long-fibre cotton absorbs well but releases moisture quickly, so it dries faster and stays plush in humid bathrooms. It also has a reputation for softening nicely with use.
    • Bamboo cotton: A blend of bamboo fibre and cotton that feels silky and cool against the skin. Bamboo is valued for being breathable and odour-resistant, which makes it a popular choice for small, windowless bathrooms.

Best Towels in Singapore for Every Home: Our Picks

Knowing the materials is one thing. Matching them to your actual bathroom is what makes the difference. Here is how we would choose from our own range, based on the most common Singapore home set-ups.

Bamboo cotton, Egyptian cotton and Turkish Aegean cotton bath towels in natural light Three fibres, three feels: BOSTON bamboo cotton, REMIERE Egyptian cotton and GALLA Turkish Aegean cotton.

    1. Best for HDB Bathrooms and Musty Smells: Bamboo Cotton

Our picks: BOSTON Bamboo Cotton Towel and BRIELLA Bamboo Bath Towel from our Signature Collection

If your bathroom has no window and one hard-working exhaust fan, start here. Both towels are made to be odour-resistant and quick-drying, with a silky softness that feels gentle on sensitive skin. It is the closest thing to a "set and forget" towel for humid flats.

    2. Best for a Hotel Feel at Home: Egyptian Cotton

Our pick: REMIERE Egyptian Cotton Bath Towel

Want that wrapped-up, five-star feeling without a towel that stays damp all day? At 495 GSM, REMIERE sits right in the sweet spot for Singapore. It is plush, smooth and highly absorbent, yet not so heavy that it struggles to dry on a standard rack.

Prefer an even bigger wrap? Our guide to bath sheets covers what to expect. Just remember that larger towels need more hanging space to dry properly.

    3. Best for Fast Drying and Lasting Softness: Turkish Aegean Cotton

Our picks: THALIA or CHRYSSA Airsense Towels, or the GALLA Aqua Fibro Towel

These towels are all about air. Airsense uses a special twisting process that introduces air into the cotton yarn, while Aqua Fibro creates tiny air pockets inside the yarn. Either way, you get a towel that feels fluffy, soaks up water quickly and does not carry the dense weight that keeps towels damp. GALLA also comes as a generous 160 x 90cm bath sheet if you like extra coverage.

    4. Best for Kids and Gifting: The Gang by Charles Millen

Our pick: The Rangers series of kids' towels

Kids are tough on bath gear. The Rangers junior hand towels and sports bath towels are made from 100% premium combed cotton, so they stay soft through frequent washing, and their cheerful characters make bath time a little easier to negotiate. They also make a thoughtful gift, especially for friends who have just collected their BTO keys. Need more ideas? See what homeowners actually want at their housewarming.

How to Keep Your Towels Fresh in Singapore Humidity

Even the best towel will start to smell if it is washed or dried the wrong way. These five habits make the biggest difference.

    1. Wash new towels before the first use. New towels often carry a light finishing residue from production. One wash clears it away and helps the fibres absorb properly, so your towel actually dries you instead of pushing water around. Give it a good shake (fluff) before hanging.
    2. Skip the fabric softener. Softener leaves a waxy film on natural fibres. It makes towels less absorbent and can hold on to the very odours you are trying to get rid of. It is one of the most common reasons a good towel suddenly feels "less thirsty".
    3. Wash gently, not hot. For our towels, use cold or warm water below 30°C on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Very hot washes and harsh cycles weaken the loops, cause lint and warp the edges. Avoid wringing, which stretches the fibres.
    4. Dry it fully, every time. Hang your towel spread out, not folded or bunched on a hook. Run the exhaust fan or leave the bathroom door open after showering, or move the towel to a rack in a better-ventilated room. On rainy weeks, a dehumidifier or a tumble dry on low heat helps.
    5. Rotate two towels. Wash towels every three to four uses, and keep a second one on standby so each towel gets a full day to dry out completely.

Your bath mat faces the same humidity every day. Our cotton vs microfibre mat guide explains which one suits your bathroom.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best towel material for Singapore's humidity?

It depends on your bathroom. Bamboo cotton is a great choice if odour is your main problem, Turkish Aegean cotton suits you if fast drying matters most, and mid-weight Egyptian cotton is ideal if you want a plush, hotel-like feel.

What GSM should I buy in Singapore?

Aim for roughly 400 to 550 GSM. It is plush enough to feel premium and light enough to dry overnight. Save 550 GSM and above for bathrooms with strong ventilation or aircon.

How often should I wash my towels?

Every three to four uses is a good rule, or sooner if your towel starts to smell. In humid weather, drying it fully between uses matters just as much as how often you wash it.

Why is my new towel shedding lint?

A little lint in the first few washes is normal, as loose fibres from production work their way out. Washing before first use and avoiding very hot cycles helps. Long-fibre cottons like Egyptian and Turkish cotton also tend to shed less over time.

Upgrade the Smallest Ritual of Your Day

Think about the first thing you do after every shower. It happens every single day, which makes a better towel one of the simplest upgrades you can make at home. No more bracing yourself for something damp and scratchy, just soft, fresh and properly dry comfort.

Whether you are setting up a new BTO flat or finally retiring that stubborn musty towel, choose the fibre that suits your bathroom and let it do the work. Explore the Charles Millen towel collection to find yours, or start with our bath bestsellers.
